Monogamy: Understanding Single-Partner Marriages

Monogamy occurs in two forms:

i) General monogamy or Strict monogamy: This is the permanent pairing of one man to one woman in which no remarriage is permitted even after the original marriage has been terminated by death or divorce.

ii) Serial monogamy or Remarrying monogamy: Monogamy This is pairing of one man to one woman or remarriage after the original marriage has been terminated by death or divorce. It refers to consecutive marriages of a man or woman to a number of different spouses, In societies where divorce is fairly common, individuals may enter into a series of marriages: marrying, divorcing and marrying again, but still maintain only one spouse at a time, Even though an individual marries only one person at a time, the remarriages of a man or woman over a number of years provide a man or woman with several spouses one after another. The actress Elizabeth Taylor who had first married Nicky Hilton, later Michael wilding, Mike Todd, Eddie Fisher , Richard Burton (twice), and John Warner, with her most recent husband Larry Fortensky is the western world’ s but known example of serial monogamy, This is Hollywood style; “polygamy in installments”.
